Role Summary
- To manage the Pharmacy Trials Unit (PTU), monitor and improve service quality & performance; direct and appraise PTU staff
- To be a leading expert in Clinical Trials and practice research for the Pharmacy Department
- To be the lead Pharmacy contact for the Research and Development (R&D) Department
- To have oversight of pharmacy activity for all Clinical Trials of Investigational Medicinal Products (CTIMPs), including dispensing, production and parenteral services units; promoting & facilitating shared / common working practices.
- To be responsible for managing investigational medicinal product (IMP) and associated requirements for commercial and non-commercial CTIMPs, including those led by Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (RDU), Devon Partnership Trust and University of Exeter (as applicable), and those hosted by the Trust.
- To provide highly expert pharmaceutical, technical, regulatory and financial advice to managers and senior clinical staff; to ensure the safe, legal and appropriate design, set-up and management of clinical trials and IMPs.
- To manage and co-ordinate regular meetings between pharmacy staff involved in clinical trials across the pharmacy service.
- To complete Pharmacy assurance reviews according to Health Research Authority (HRA) guidance for either the HRA or RDU as Sponsor

This is an exciting opportunity to join the pharmacy clinical trials team at the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust at a time of innovation and service development. The post holder will be responsible for managing a team of pharmacists and technicians in the delivery of a high quality, flexible clinical trial pharmacy service, liasing closely with medical, nursing. pharmacy and non-medical staff. You will play an active role in ensuring adherence to standards, promoting active research and taking the team to the next stage of their development in order to meet the increasing demands of clinical trial specialities and service users beyond the Trust walls.
You will have excellent communication skills, be self-motivated, innovative and committed to providing the highest quality of research and care for patients recruited to clinical trials. You will need an ability to develop effective working relationships, to challenge and to prioritise your own work and be a role model to the team. You will be required to be flexible, reliable and able to work on your own initiative to provide an efficient service to a growing research environment.
We are at the forefront of clinical research at national and international level. Participation in clinical research demonstrates the Trust’s commitment to improving the quality of care we offer and to making our contribution to wider health improvement. The Trust has recently been selected to host a NIHR Patient Recruitment Centre, one of five new sites selected across England. The centres will provide dedicated space, purpose-designed facilities and medical expertise to deliver clinical research within NHS hospital sites, with the aim of increasing the number of studies being run across England. The initiative will increase the NHS’s capacity to deliver vital research for patients, while decreasing the time it takes to set-up late-phase commercial trials within the NHS - improving the UK’s competitiveness in the global market and providing opportunities for patients to benefit from early access to innovation.

Our pharmacy clinical trials team covers activity across all specialities including oncology and haematology and also the NIHR Exeter Clinical Research Facility. The team comprises of the clinical trials manager, 3 clinical trials technicians, a senior assistant technical officer and lead clinical trials pharmacist. We are committed to providing and supporting education and personal development opportunities for this post.

- To provide highly expert pharmaceutical, technical, regulatory and financial advice to managers and senior clinical staff; to ensure the safe, legal and appropriate design, set-up and management of clinical trials and IMPs.
- To manage and co-ordinate regular meetings between pharmacy staff involved in clinical trials across the pharmacy service.
- To complete Pharmacy assurance reviews according to Health Research Authority (HRA) guidance for either the HRA or RDU as Sponsor.
- To be the named license holder for Schedule 1 controlled drugs used in clinical trial activities within the Trust
Working pattern: 37.5 per week.
Salary: Band 8B £56,164 to £65,262
