We're pleased to announce this exciting opportunity to join our friendly, dedicated Radiotherapy Physics team as an Apprentice Medical Physics Technologist. The post is based at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, part of Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

Radiotherapy Physics provides scientific support services to the treatment of cancer using ionising radiation produced by linear accelerators (linacs) and radioactive brachytherapy sources, for example. Alongside your studies you could be working on a full range of tasks supporting radiotherapy specialising in quality control (QC) of the linacs and dosimetry (radiation dose) measurements. You will also learn the fundamentals of radiotherapy cancer treatment, including the computation of patient radiotherapy treatment plans, and the operation of state-of-the-art radiotherapy equipment. You will be supported and supervised by a registered Clinical Scientist.
Applicants should be numerate, computer literate and practically minded. Applicants must meet the entry requirements for the degree course at the University of West of England in Bristol. This currently requires 128 UCAS points from A level (ABB, including at least one relevant science from Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths or Physiology), + Maths and English GCSE Grade C (4) or equivalent’. Alternative qualifications may be accepted, subject to the UWE admissions process. Applications may be considered from candidates with a lower UCAS points score who can demonstrate a particular aptitude for the role.
You will undertake a fully funded, professionally accredited BSc (Hons) Degree qualification in Healthcare Science (Medical Physics Technology) specialising in Radiotherapy Physics (https://courses.uwe.ac.uk/ST0413B/healthcare-science-practitioner-medical-physics-technology). There may be an opportunity to join the department permanently at the end of your training but in any case, your new-found skills as a radiotherapy physics assistant will be in high demand as there is a national shortage of trained staff. This post will be commencing in September 2026.
Part of the work will need to be performed outside of normal treatment hours so the applicant must be able and prepared to work until 6.30pm on at least two days a week and to start work at 7.30am on other days.
Salary will be paid at agenda for change band 5 annex 21 and the starting salary will be £25,377 per annum, based on 37.5 hours per week. The salary rises to £27,330 in year 2 then £29,282 in year 3, based on 2026/27 salary scales. When you successfully complete the apprenticeship, the starting salary for a qualified band 5 post would be £32,073 per annum (at current NHS payscale). Please note that the Band 5 job description advertised is the role once the apprenticeship is completed.

Candidates shortlisted must be available all day for interview on Monday 27th July 2026. These will take place in person at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, Wonford, Exeter in the Medical Physics department, Exeter Oncology Centre. The successful candidate offered an apprenticeship must be able to accept, with proof of the required A level outcomes (where appropriate), by Wednesday 29th July 2026. The deadline for final applications to UWE is Friday 31st July 2026 (predicted grades are sufficient for application and enrolment with UWE, pending confirmation of actuals).
