Radiotherapy Physics Medical Physicist Apprenticeship – Radiotherapy Physics specialising in Radiotherapy Treatment Planning and Mould Room

We're pleased to announce this exciting opportunity to join our friendly, dedicated Radiotherapy Physics team as an Apprentice Medical Physics Technologist. The post is based at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, part of Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. This trust is renowned for research and innovation and provides services for more than 615,000 people covering more than 2000 miles across Devon. 

The appointee will operate as part of our Treatment Planning and Mould Room teams. The main duties are the preparation of CT scan data and creation of clinical radiotherapy treatment plans, and to assist in the production of immobilisation and dose delivery devices and equipment. You will work alongside and be supported by a team of experienced Radiotherapy Physics staff including Dosimetrists, Physicists and Clinical Technicians.

This role is suited for somebody with a passion for the application of science and technology in healthcare, possessing good practical and analytical skills. If you are a collaborative team player and great communicator and would like to pursue a well-paid career with good progression prospects, serving NHS patients daily, then this opportunity could be for you. 

You will undertake a fully funded, professionally accredited BSc (Hons) Degree qualification in Healthcare Science (Medical Physics Technology) specialising in Radiotherapy Physics (https://courses.uwe.ac.uk/ST0413B/healthcare-science-practitioner-medical-physics-technology). There may be an opportunity to join the department permanently at the end of your training but in any case, your new-found skills as a radiotherapy physics assistant will be in high demand as there is a national shortage of trained staff.  This post will be commencing in September 2026.

Applicants should be numerate, computer literate and practically minded. Applicants must meet the entry requirements for the degree course at the University of West of England in Bristol. This currently requires 128 UCAS points from A level (ABB, including at least one relevant science from Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths or Physiology), + Maths and English GCSE Grade C (4) or equivalent’. Alternative qualifications may be accepted, subject to the UWE admissions process. Applications may be considered from candidates with a lower UCAS points score who can demonstrate a particular aptitude for the role.

Salary will be paid at agenda for change band 5 annex 21 and the starting salary will be £25,377 per annum, based on 37.5 hours per week.  The salary rises to £27,330 in year 2 then £29,282 in year 3, based on 2026/27 salary scales. When you successfully complete the apprenticeship, the starting salary for a qualified band 5 post would be £32,073 per annum (based on current NHS payscales). Please note that the Band 5 job description advertised is the role once the apprenticeship is completed.

Candidates shortlisted must be available all day for interview on Wednesday 22nd July. These will take place in person at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, Wonford, Exeter in the Medical Physics department, Exeter Oncology Centre. The successful candidate offered an apprenticeship must be able to accept, with proof of the required A level outcomes (where appropriate), by 5pm Thursday 23rd July. The deadline for final applications to UWE is 31st July (predicted grades are sufficient for application and enrolment with UWE, pending confirmation of actuals).
