Role Summary

The Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and forward-thinking Consultant Obstetrician to join our integrated Obstetrics and Gynaecology department.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a supportive, progressive and ambitious department committed to delivering high-quality, patient-centred maternity care. The post has been developed to strengthen consultant capacity and resilience across our obstetric service, supporting the continued delivery of safe, sustainable care across Eastern and Northern Devon.

The successful candidate will work across both the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital and North Devon District Hospital, contributing to the delivery and ongoing development of obstetric services while supporting a collaborative, cross-site model of care.

About the Role

The successful candidate will become an integral member of our consultant obstetric team, contributing to the delivery of obstetric services across both Eastern and Northern Devon.

The role has been developed to strengthen consultant resilience across the service by increasing obstetric capacity, supporting cross-site working and contributing to the continued development of maternity services. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with consultant colleagues and the wider multidisciplinary team to deliver high-quality, patient-centred care while supporting innovation, quality improvement and service development.

As part of the role, the successful candidate will undertake the Clinical Lead for Fetal Monitoring role, providing clinical leadership for Fetal Monitoring education, governance and quality improvement across the maternity service.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participate in the Exeter obstetric consultant on-call rota.
  • Deliver obstetric services across both the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital and North Devon District Hospital.
  • Contribute to labour ward, antenatal, postnatal and elective obstetric services.
  • Deliver specialist maternal medicine clinics and support women with complex pregnancies.
  • Undertake the Clinical Lead for Fetal Monitoring, supporting education, governance, guideline implementation and continuous improvement and working collaboratively with the fetal monitoring midwife.
  • Work collaboratively with consultant colleagues and the multidisciplinary team to support the ongoing development of maternity services across the Trust.
  • Contribute to teaching, educational supervision, audit, research, clinical governance and quality improvement activities.
  • Contribute to service development projects aligned with Trust priorities, including improving antenatal clinic capacity, pathways and service resilience.

Professional Development

We welcome applications from Consultant Obstetricians with an interest in maternal medicine and fetal monitoring. Applicants with additional specialist interests that complement the needs of the department are encouraged to discuss how these could be incorporated into the role.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop their specialist interests aligned with departmental priorities. The department has a strong commitment to supporting education, leadership, quality improvement, innovation and continuing professional development.

Person Specification

Applicants must hold:

  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise.
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Obstetrics and Gynaecology (or be within six months of CCT at the time of interview).
  • MRCOG or equivalent qualification.
  • Evidence of clinical competence and experience in obstetrics.
  • Experience in labour ward, antenatal and postnatal care.
  • Experience managing high-risk obstetric patients.

Desirable

  • ATSM or equivalent experience in Maternal Medicine or another specialist obstetric area.
  • Experience in maternity safety and quality improvement.
  • Experience of Fetal monitoring education, governance or guideline implementation.
  • Experience supporting cross-site service delivery.
  • Evidence of service development, quality improvement and multidisciplinary working.

Working Pattern: Full time - 10 PAs. Please see the job description for the provisional job plan. The on-call provision for this post is 1 in 16 at present but the plan is to move to 1 in 12.
