Role Summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen on Lyme Ward, we are looking to recruit a motivated, experienced, dynamic forward-thinking professional who is seeking a new challenge as a Ward Sister/Charge nurse who is required to be flexible with days, nights weekends to join our team.

Lyme Ward is a highly specialist Colorectal surgical 28 bedded ward offering post-operative care for Colorectal and Upper GI patients, as well as Cancer surgery. Our patient group comprises of elective, acute, high dependency post ITU and emergency.

As part of the management team your lead role will be in driving standards clinically to ensure optimum patient safety and experience. You will be expected to initiate and lead change on this developing and specialist ward. Both organisational and negotiating skills will be current in achieving both your management and clinical goals.

Daily clinical roles would include ward co-ordination, teaching and supporting team members, attending ward multi-disciplinary team meetings, delivering and monitoring high standard of care for our specialties. Supporting the Clinical Nurse Manager with management tasks such as; sickness/capability monitoring, appraisals, training/competencies, recruitment and rostering.

Within this role you need to be able to demonstrate evidence of leadership, motivation, excellent communication skills and good time management. The overall job purpose of the Sister/Charge Nurse is to provide clinical and managerial leadership to the nursing and multi-professional team. This includes acting as a clinical leader and an expert practitioner liaising, guiding and advising the multidisciplinary team and external agencies in the provision of optimum patient care.

This will require the Sister/Charge Nurse to regularly review the clinical records of patients under their sphere of responsibility, to evaluate the effectiveness of the standard of care planning and delivery, and to use the results to work with the team to improve patient outcomes.  Within their leadership role they will be responsible for providing feedback on the evaluation of good and poor practice to team members ensuring effective role modelling and mentorship to the team.

S/he will also be expected to play a proactive role in quality and service improvement and working closely with the Clinical Nurse Manager and multi-disciplinary team, assist in the auditing of clinical standards of care within their clinical area.   This includes ensuring a good working environment in which all patients receive a high standard of clinical care.

Working Pattern: Shift work. Long days 07:30-20:00. Nights 19:30-08:00. Early's 07:30 - 15:30. Lates 12:00-20:00. Weekends and public holidays. 

Interview Date: 24/06/2025 

Pay: The salary advertised for this position reflects the Agenda for Change 2025/6 rates, inclusive of a 3.6% pay award which will be implemented later this year. If you join before the implementation date, the pay award will be backdated to your start date. Until then, remuneration will be based on the 2024/5 pay bandings (Pay scales for 2024/25 | NHS Employers)

Please note, this is a fixed term contract until 31/08/2026.  For current NHS employees this post could be a secondment opportunity.
