Working in a Therapy Support Worker role is an ideal starting point for a career at Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and the NHS.

Within the Therapy department we nurture a workforce of home-grown talent and are proud of our many staff who began their careers in Therapy Support Worker roles and have progressed into other more specialist or registrant roles.

The post is based in the Neurorehab Service . The Team work across in patient, community (Early Supported Discharge ESD) and out-patient settings to provide specialist, evidence based Neurorehab to patients following stoke or other Neurological diagnosis. This post is rotational across community and in patients enabling you to gain experience of the patient’s rehab journey. You will also be supported to acquire knowledge and skills within each setting that will give you a sound core competency in Stroke care and Neurorehab.

The in-patient team are an integrated physiotherapy and occupational therapy team working on a 24 bedded ward at North Devon District Hospital. They work closely with the broader MDT including the Nursing staff, Doctors, Speech and Language Therapists, Dieticians and Psychologists. The team is specialist in providing acute therapy post stroke and neurological diagnosis. They assess patient’s physical and cognitive abilities as well as functional ability with things like walking, washing and dressing and activities in the kitchen. They consider the patient’s previous abilities, home and lifestyle to plan goals and formulate a treatment plan. The team work closely with patients and families to support them with what has happened and plan for the future.

The community ESD team visit patients in their homes as soon as patients are able to be discharged from hospital, and provide intensive, specialist Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy. The team work with patients to understand what is important to them, and set realistic and achievable goals. Community rehab sessions are varied from supporting exercise programmes, assisting patients to learn to walk, practicing tasks using an affected arm, assessing for adaptations and equipment and outdoor mobility practice to name but a few. There are lots of opportunities for joint working and discussion with senior therapists. The team are excellent at problem solving and communicating well with other agencies involved in the patient’s care such as care agencies, social workers and district nurses. The ESD team also run in reach sessions to see patients in the local community hospital gym settings and run a VISTA stroke exercise and education class.

Working Pattern: Monday to Friday 8am -4pm. One weekend shift (8am - 4pm) in every 6 weeks.
