Role Summary

We are looking for an experienced, motivated, enthusiastic Safeguarding Specialist with an in-depth knowledge of safeguarding adults and children who will be part of the safeguarding team at the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (Royal Devon) and promote excellent safeguarding practice. The post holder will have experience working in a safeguarding role and will hold relevant professional qualifications and registration.

To provide advice and guidance to staff in the Trust on all aspects of adult and child safeguarding, ensuring that staff understand their role and responsibilities in these areas.

  • Assist staff in undertaking their safeguarding role as appropriate, with an emphasis on staff development rather than the creation of dependency.
  • Work with all members of the Safeguarding Specialists to participate in national and local initiatives to protect children and adults from harm and ensure that changes in legislation, learning, information and ideas are disseminated Trust wide.
  • Work alongside Trust staff to design and develop processes that enable staff to protect individuals at risk.
  • Assist the Trust in contributing to Devon’s safeguarding adult reviews/domestic homicide reviews/safeguarding practice reviews/rapid review processes, writing reports/internal management reviews and disseminating and implementing the findings and recommendations.
  • Lead and produce written reports as part of Section 42 safeguarding enquiries and any other safeguarding investigations within the Trust.
  • As part of the Safeguarding team:
  • identify shortfalls in practice within the Trust or any other deficit, that may leave individuals at risk of abuse, neglect or harm.
  • work collaboratively within the organisation, with children, adults and families at risk and across agencies to form partnerships and working arrangements that facilitate effective safeguarding practices
  • develop and deliver safeguarding training and guidance sessions to staff across the Trust
  • lead safeguarding related audits.
  • represent the Trust at Local Safeguarding Partnership subgroups as required.
  • represent the Safeguarding Team at Trust safeguarding meetings and committees.
  • be aware of and provide guidance to staff with regard to the Trust’s Prevent strategy.
  • Undertake project work under the direction of the Safeguarding Specialist Operational Lead, Head of Safeguarding or Assistant Director of Safeguarding.
  • Facilitate good standards of record keeping, report and statement writing.
  • Liaise with Trust’s Legal Team and Devon County Council Legal Services Team to facilitate the Trust’s compliance with legal orders and provide support to staff when making statements or attending court.
  • Provide safeguarding and management support to the Safeguarding Specialists and support/supervision to Health IDVA and the administrative team.
  • Work with the Safeguarding Specialist Operational Lead, Head of Safeguarding or Assistant Director of Safeguarding, Employee Resolution and Support Team and the Associate Directors of Care Groups in the management of allegations of abuse/within the Trust.
  • Liaise with key external safeguarding partners in Devon e.g. Police, Social Care, Education, other health providers, ICB etc. to ensure robust relationships
  • Attend safeguarding strategy meetings and case conferences as requested by the Safeguarding Specialist Operational Lead either as a support to staff and/or as a representative of the Trust.
  • Emphasise and promote the importance of good discharge planning and follow-up for patients discharged from our care, specifically where there have been safeguarding concerns
  • Work closely with Named Safeguarding Nurses/Professionals in other health organisations to share good practice and to strengthen opportunities for development and networking within the field of safeguarding.
  • In order to build upon the achievements of the service thus far, an emphasis is placed upon a team ethos of mutual support and joint decision-making through collaborative effort. The post holder will be expected to work as part of the team to cover the workload.
  • Work with the Head of Safeguarding/Safeguarding Specialist Operational Lead to develop and maintain the Trust’s safeguarding policies and ensure that they are adhered to.
  • Work with the Safeguarding Team to provide clinical supervision to staff as required, ensuring effective case management is in place for complex situations when there are safeguarding concerns
  • Carry out any other appropriate clinical duties as identified by the Safeguarding Specialist Operational Lead.

The safeguarding service is an exceptional service to work for. We are a team providing specialist advice and operational support to staff across the Royal Devon in the Acute, Community and Specialist Services. We represent the Trust and work proactively with the Torbay and Devon Safeguarding Adult and Children Partnerships

The post-holder will be a Band 7 Senior Safeguarding Specialist and will have responsibility to provide line management and leadership to safeguarding team members. They will report to the Safeguarding Specialist Operational Leads and work closely with them to deliver our statutory safeguarding requirements.

Under the direction of the Safeguarding Specialist Operational Leads, Head of Safeguarding and Associate Director of Safeguarding the postholder will be required to represent the Trust at multi-agency, integrated care board and safeguarding partnership meetings and sub group activity.

Working Pattern:  There are opportunities to undertake full time or part time hours to cover the safeguarding service Monday to Friday 08.30 - 4.30pm
