Role Summary

To assess, plan, deliver and evaluate care of patients requiring intensive/High dependency care. To provide support for patient’s families and significant others.  This will require the post holder to develop the skills required in order to deliver a variety of therapeutic interventions for patients on ICU and manage both physical and psychological patient care issues.  They will need to liaise and communicate with the various multi-disciplinary team members who contribute to a patient’s management on ICU.  The post-holder will be required to participate in patient safety and the delivery of care in accordance with the Core Standards for ICU (Intensive Care Society, 2013).

The post-holder will also be required to assist in guiding and supporting Assistant Practitioners as appropriate.  Act as a role model/mentor and assessor to both pre and post-registration learners and newly appointed staff.

To practice in accordance with NMC and professional Codes, statutory requirements and the Trust’s Vision for Nursing.

To work flexibly within any area of the Trust as directed by the Senior Nurse.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join the Intensive Care Team.

The successful applicant will deliver individual care to critically ill patients requiring advanced support. The applicant will also be required to liaise with the multi-professional team and other services/departments within the Trust to promote good working relationships.

The applicant will need to have a broad and sound clinical knowledge and ideally experienced in caring for acutely ill patients. They should either be a registered nurse or an ODP, newly qualified applications will be considered if a PIN number is available within three months of the interview process.

Training Opportunities in Intensive Care

  • We utilize nationally recognized competency packages of learning (CC3N) which are transferable to all Critical Care Units. Additionally, all staff have the opportunity to work with specialized Practice Education Team and attend New Starters Study days. 
  • Following completion of the appropriate CC3N Competencies there is an opportunity to interview for a 40 credit level 6 University accredited ITU module as part of the Plymouth University partnership module. 
  • Following attainment of a 40 credit Critical care course, there are additional opportunities to be interviewed for the level 6 Paediatric Course.
  • Senior ITU trained nurses will receive additional training to care for paediatrics that are admitted to adult critical care as we have a number of paediatric patients that require stabilization prior to transfer to a paediatric critical care unit.

Working Pattern: 37.5 hours per week. 11.5hr day and night shifts - weekend and bank holiday working included.
