Role Summary

The Imaging Cancer Patient Navigator is a key administrative role within an NHS imaging department, responsible for coordinating a patient’s journey from referral through to diagnosis. The postholder ensures that imaging appointments such as X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs are booked efficiently and within national waiting-time targets, while actively monitoring patient progress and addressing any delays. Acting as a central point of contact, they communicate with patients, clinicians, and multidisciplinary teams to provide updates, resolve queries, and maintain accurate records using NHS IT systems. The role requires strong organisational and communication skills, with a focus on delivering a smooth, timely, and supportive experience for patients—particularly those on urgent or cancer pathways.

We are seeking highly motivated, enthusiastic, organised and adaptable person with an eye for attention to detail and accuracy to join our dynamic and proactive team. The successful candidates will be able to demonstrate the ability to have good communication skills in order to build strong working relationships across departments within the trust. They must be prepared to work as part of a team and autonomously. The post holder will assist in the smooth and efficient running of Medical Imaging services and provide a professional interface between the department and other wards within the hospital.

Medical Imaging continues to use CRIS as its primary computer system in conjunction with Epic and full training will be given to the successful candidate. Along with navigating the two systems the successful candidate will have IT skills and experience working with excel and data management. The post holder will validate, resolve and correct data quality issues by working closely with administrative staff. They will be responsible for utilising systems/databases to track patients and upload relevant cancer data. Create new databases as requested and prepare reports for the administrative team to help develop the service. To analyse, interpret and apply judgements involving a range of complex multi-specialty patient pathways to ensure compliance with RTT and Access Policy rules.

The workload is interesting and varied and would suit a person who has a can-do attitude to problem solving and is keen on developing a wide range of knowledge and skills. A successful candidate will use own initiative to implement, analyse, interpret and apply judgements involving patient pathways to improve medical imaging services. Daily review and completion of the Medical Imaging cancer PTL tracker. This includes: requesting bookings from the team, addressing any long waiters, following up on safety check delays and chase reporting if outstanding. Escalation any areas of concerns and identifying opportunities for improvement.
