Consultant in Acute Medicine

Role Summary

We recognise that the AMU is an exciting but intensive arena to work in, and so we invite you to design your job plan with us, to create a role that is sustainable and enables you to deliver your best.

You might split your time in the AMU with work in another speciality, taking part in research, teaching or developing your management competencies.

Whichever you choose, you’ll be supported by a Trust that truly values its staff and prides itself on patient care, learning and rapid career progression.

More detail about the role

If this sounds like an innovative and forward-thinking approach, then that’s us as a Trust. Newly formed in April 2022 by bringing together the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust and Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust, our combined acute medicine units provide assessment and urgent treatment to a population of 615,000 and our specialist services to a wider population across the South West Peninsula.

We are looking for consultant colleagues to join our team in acute medicine in North Devon, joining a team of forward-thinking doctors in a dynamic trust, able to effect changes in our service and make a real difference to the welfare of our patients. NDDH has an Acute Medicine  Unit (AMU) of 26 beds and a newly developed Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) area. SDEC is our way of innovating care, where we offer rapid access to diagnostics and procedures. Suitable patients are diagnosed and managed by experienced middle grade doctors and fully supported by a team of Advanced Care Practitioners. Building on our successes, we now wish to expand this service and increase our percentage of patients though same day care.

Our ambitious Virtual Ward project began a year ago and is well established. We hold 50 patients under Virtual Ward, covering a portfolio of conditions that we now manage in the patient’s home. We aim to double this number by the end of 2023. An Enhanced Care Area within AMU is in development.

The Trust has an electronic patient record (EPIC), a multi-million-pound research facility, a significant development budget and big plans for the future.

We are committed to offering genuinely workable job plans, recognising that acute medicine is a challenging specialty. As a consultant group we promote different working options, plus diverse portfolios, to make our jobs balanced and sustainable. If you wish to discuss a job plan combining specialty work with acute medicine, then please do get in touch.

We are based in Devon in the South West of England; a county renowned for its natural beauty, schools, infrastructure and quality of life. If you are interested in finding out more about the positions available, we’d love to hear from you.
