More detail about the role
Clinical coding is a specialist career that plays an important part in the NHS. High quality coded data supports patient care, service planning, clinical governance, performance reporting, research and the appropriate reimbursement of care provided by RDUH. Accuracy, concentration and attention to detail are therefore essential, and the role involves sustained use of digital systems and VDU equipment.
Training and Development
You will follow a structured training programme delivered by our NHS England Approved Trainer, combining formal clinical coding education with specialty based learning, practical experience and supervised coding.
Supported by experienced colleagues, you will develop your knowledge of anatomy, physiology and medical terminology and learn how to apply national clinical coding standards using ICD-10 and OPCS-4.
This is a progressive training opportunity with a clear career pathway. You will start at Band 3. Following 12 months of training and successful completion of the in-house examination, you will progress to Band 4. Once you have successfully achieved Accredited Clinical Coder status, you will progress to Band 5.
Main Duties of the Job
• Review and interpret clinical information from electronic health records and other approved sources.
• Identify diagnoses, procedures and other relevant information for each episode of care.
• Assign accurate diagnosis and procedure codes in accordance with national standards, conventions and local policies.
• Enter coded information accurately and promptly using the Trust’s clinical coding systems.
• Seek clarification or obtain missing information through approved processes when the clinical record is incomplete or unclear.
• Work towards and meet agreed standards for quality, completeness and productivity.
• Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with information governance requirements at all times.
• Take an active part in training, assessment, feedback and continuous professional development.
• Communicate coding requirements clearly and professionally with colleagues across the Trust.
About You
You will be educated to A level standard, or hold an equivalent relevant qualification, and have strong literacy, analytical and problem solving skills. You will be methodical, able to maintain concentration for sustained periods and committed to producing consistently accurate work.
An interest in healthcare and some knowledge of anatomy, physiology or medical terminology is essential. Previous NHS or healthcare experience is desirable but not essential, as comprehensive training and support will be provided.
If you are curious about how clinical information is transformed into meaningful healthcare data and are looking for an opportunity to develop a specialist NHS career with structured training and progression, we would welcome your application.
Working Pattern: 37.5 hours Monday - Friday. 7.5 hours per day
Interview Date: To be confirmed
