This is a training post leading to becoming an Advanced Critical Care Practitioner in the ICU on the Eastern site. The role is endorsed by the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine and will on successful completion of the training will work as part of the Medical team on the ICU across the 24/7 period. Utilising the four pillars of medical practice this role has not only advanced clinical skills, knowledge and capabilities but a contribution to education, research and leadership  within the ICU. This post holder will join an established experienced ACCP team.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a trainee advanced Critical Care Practitioner within Critical Care at the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation trust.

The Critical care team at the RDUH seek to develop further the (ACCP) role with the training and appointment of further ACCPs. Recognised as the longest standing unit employing ACCPs, having had a significant and active development in the role from its’ inception – this is an opportunity to work alongside a well-established, friendly and supportive team.

The ACCPs work closely with the current extended critical care team and alongside medical colleagues. They work autonomously or under Consultant supervision in specific circumstances to deliver patient care to Level 1-3 critically ill patients across the Trust. The role includes review of patients on acute wards and in the Emergency Department. The ACCP role is a vital component in the development of a flexible and sustainable workforce for Critical Care in the Emergency Care Hospital.

The current unit is a busy and progressive Critical Care Unit with a clear patient-centred focus with plans to increase critical care capacity in the coming months - hence the additional  funding opportunity for this year’s intake. There is an emphasis on developing health care practice through ownership, research/evidence-based practices, commitment and multidisciplinary involvement.

The role involves extensive training according to the National competency framework for ACCP, and a training programme meticulously aligned to the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine Curriculum for ACCPs with the University of Plymouth to MSC level leading to FICM membership.

As a Trainee Advanced Critical Care Practitioner you will already be an experienced Clinician ideally with extensive Critical Care knowledge, and a high level of clinical skill. Applicants are welcomed from those professional groups eligible to undertake non-medical prescribing under current statutory requirements. You will be a motivated team player who possesses excellent verbal and written communication skills. The successful candidate should possess a strong desire to develop themselves to deliver outstanding care within the four pillars of advanced clinical practice, helping to develop the advanced practice strategy within the Trust. Successful applicants will be required to undertake their MSc in Advanced Critical Care Practice through the apprenticeship programme being supernumerary for two years during the training period to meet the requirement of Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine Membership status for ACCPs with progression to joining the medical rota for Intensive care across the 24/7 period. On successful completion of the full  MSc and achievement of Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine membership for ACCPs there will be progression to a band 8A.

Working Pattern: Two years supernumerary full time 37.5 hours per week, third year 20% non clinical thereafter contracted to work across the 24/7 period with a requirement to cover out of hours on a frequent rostered basis.
