Role Summary

  • The ACP will work across the acute respiratory teams both in and out-patients on the main site but with a substantial clinical caseload in intensive care.
  • To co-ordinate and develop the follow-up clinic providing evidenced-based interventions.
  • The post holder advanced clinical skills to support trust-wide tracheostomy management and provide assessment, advice and support for complex cases across the acute service. 
  • The post holder will develop an extended scope of practice beyond their primary profession including assessing and managing referrals, referring to other specialties, requesting and interpreting radiological imaging and other investigations commonly required, performing procedures including arterial blood gas sampling and focused lung ultrasound for Intensive care (FUSIC).
  • Working autonomously in conducting clinical examination, formulating a working diagnosis and providing timely treatment interventions in accordance with their scope of practice. 
  • Education and development is important to the Trust and in accordance the ACP will be assigned a supervisor who will be available to meet on a regular basis.
  • Exercise advanced clinical expertise, levels of judgement, discretion and decision making in clinical care, whilst maintaining a professional portfolio that supports their scope of practice.
  • Provide expert professional advice to patients, carers and colleagues.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for skilled, experienced Physiotherapist to progress their Physiotherapy career in the specialty of Respiratory with a clinical caseload in ICU. This developmental Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) role is only available on a full-time basis and the expectation is the successful candidate will begin the ACP MSc training from September 2023. Only upon completion will they be payed at a Band 8a pay rate.

The ACP role is built around the four key pillars of advance clinic skills, leadership & management, research and education. The ACP will work across both the inpatient and outpatient respiratory pathways whilst carrying a substantial Physiotherapy clinical caseload on the intensive care unit. The ACP will utilise advanced clinical skills to support trust-wide tracheostomy management and provide assessment, advice and support for complex cases across the acute service. The role also carries a responsibility to co-ordinate and develop the ICU follow-up clinic providing evidence-based intervention to patients who have been discharged following staying on the unit.

The ACP will provide supervision to Clinical Lead Physiotherapists working across the respiratory specialties to enable them to develop clinically through increasing knowledge and advancing clinical skills. Where appropriate the ACP will work alongside registered staff in the clinical environment and contribute to the co-ordination of training programmes in place across the Physiotherapy service. The role will also contribute to relevant research initiatives across the Trust whilst providing assurance that interventions being used across the Physiotherapy service are underpinned by research evidence.
