Surgical Simulation Fellow (Core trainee level)

This exciting, initially, yearlong post will allow a core trainee level surgical trainee to support the running of the Simulation Suite in the Exeter Health Surgical Researches Unit (HeSRU). The post will also involve supporting the teaching of medical students.  There are two further Quality Improvement Fellows and the post holder can take part in their projects as well. If needed the year can be extended. It is very likely that the post holder will be able to present and published on several occasions and there is financial support for attending training and conferences. From a clinical perspective the post holder would be part of the colo-rectal unit

This exciting, initially, yearlong post will allow a core trainee level surgical trainee to run quality improvement and research projects through the Exeter Health Surgical Research Unit (HeSRU); the year can be extended in needed. It is very likely that the post holder will be able to present and publish on several occasions and there is financial support for attending training and conferences. From a clinical perspective the post holder would be part of the colo-rectal unit.

The post-holder will be mentored by a practicing consultant surgeon who has specific time allocated to this. The post will start from August 2024 for 12 months. The post holder will be fully on the on-call SHO rota; a 1:14 full shift pattern. The on-call team consists of a consultant, registrar, SHO and F1. In addition, one day a week will be service commitment but the rest of the time will be free for quality improvement and research.

The Exeter Colorectal Unit provides a full range of colorectal services. The following subspecialties are therefore covered:

  • Core colorectal surgery and diagnostics
  • Laparoscopy colorectal surgery
  • Advanced Pelvic oncology
  • Functional bowel disease/Pelvic Floor Disease
  • Intestinal failure and complex inflammatory bowel disease including pouch surgery.
  • Problem stomas
  • Complex abdominal wall reconstruction surgery

The Colorectal team as of August 2024 will consist of 12 consultant surgeons who form the integrated Emergency General Surgery rota in addition to 6 Upper GI surgeons.

Working Pattern: Mix of oncalls, theatre, wards and projects
