Role Summary

To manage the set-up, maintenance and close down of a portfolio of Clinical Trials of Investigational Medicinal Products (CTIMPs).

To ensure effective operation and day to day running of active Clinical Trials within the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust to ensure regulatory compliance and management of supplies to ensure suitable treatment is available for all trial participants.

To ensure the Clinical Trials Pharmacy Team (CTPT) and its staff operate to standards of excellence in customer care and with a strong patient focus.

To ensure that the department is complying with the requirement of the Home Office license for Schedule 1 controlled drugs and completed the annual renewal process.

To identify and monitor the needs of service users and CTPT, and effectively plan and implement changes and improvements to the CTPT.

To support the training of medical, nursing and pharmacy staff in all aspects of handling drugs in clinical trials, including the preparation of injectable products in clinical areas as required by the clinical trial protocols.

To participate in safe systems of work and documentation of these and to undertake safe and accurate preparation of a wide range of aseptic products on a daily basis, (including Cytotoxics, epidurals, antibiotics, injectables, novel agents and monoclonal antibodies).

This is an exciting opportunity to join the pharmacy clinical trials team at the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust at a time of innovation and service development. The post holder will be an essential member of the Clinical Trials Pharmacy Team (CTPT) delivering a high quality, flexible clinical trial service whilst also providing expertise and leadership in the aseptic preparation of Investigational Medicinal Products (IMPs). You will play an active role in ensuring adherence to standards and regulations in both Aseptic and Clinical Trial services.

You will have excellent communication skills, be self-motivated and committed to providing the highest quality of research and care for patients recruited to clinical trials. You will need an ability to develop effective working relationships and to prioritise your own work. You will be required to be flexible, reliable and able to work on your own and within the team to support our growing research environment.

We are at the forefront of clinical research at national and international level. Participation in clinical research demonstrates the Trust’s commitment to improving the quality of care we offer and to making our contribution to wider health improvement. The Trust has recently been selected to host a NIHR Patient Recruitment Centre, one of five new sites selected across England. The centres will provide dedicated space, purpose-designed facilities and medical expertise to deliver clinical research within NHS hospital sites, with the aim of increasing the number of studies being run across England. The initiative will increase the NHS’s capacity to deliver vital research for patients, while decreasing the time it takes to set-up late-phase commercial trials within the NHS - improving the UK’s competitiveness in the global market and providing opportunities for patients to benefit from early access to innovation.

Our pharmacy clinical trials team covers activity across all specialities including oncology and haematology and also the NIHR Exeter Clinical Research Facility. In addition to this post the team comprises of the clinical trial pharmacy manager, 4 clinical trials technicians, a senior assistant technical officer and lead clinical trials pharmacist.
