Role Summary

To provide a range of core and specialist orthoptic services at the Royal Devon university NHS foundation trust in Exeter.  You will play a key role in the assessment of patients following a stroke as part of a multi-disciplinary team.  This will include seeing patients within the acute stroke unit, inpatient rehabilitation unit and providing support during their rehabilitation in an out-patient setting.

To work as an autonomous practitioner in accordance with professional & regulatory body guidelines and codes of practice (Health & Care Professions Council and the British & Irish Orthoptic Society) and statutory Trust requirements. 

To participate in undergraduate and post-graduate teaching programmes for student and qualified health professionals in the Ophthalmology department.

More detail about the role

We have an exciting newly created post at band 6 level for an enthusiastic orthoptist interested in working in stroke care. You will also be involved in delivering core and specialist orthoptic services that may include consultant led clinics for paediatric ophthalmology, adult ocular motility, neuro-ophthalmology and thyroid eye disease clinics as required.

Training will be provided where required, and the post holder will be fully supported by the current lead orthoptist for stroke. There will also be opportunity to study for a post graduate module in stroke to allow you to develop your skills and knowledge.

You will be joining a team of 7 Orthoptists with a wide range of specialisms. Exeter’s ophthalmology services are expanding rapidly, and this is an exciting time to join our unit, with opportunities to develop into extended roles.

The post holder will be based at the West of England Eye Unit in Exeter but will also work single handed in community Orthoptic clinics in Mid and East Devon. You will work in the acute and rehabilitation inpatient stroke unit and post stroke out-patient clinics.

We are a recognised student placement centre for Orthoptic undergraduates from Sheffield, Liverpool and University College London and the successful candidate would ideally have some teaching experience and be interested in developing these teaching skills further.

The Royal Devon & Exeter NHS Foundation Trust uses a fully digital patient record system called EPIC which was adopted in October 2020.

A diploma/degree in Orthoptics and HCPC registration is essential. The post holder will be expected to travel between the hospital sites and various locations therefore a full driving license and car access is highly desirable.
