Role Summary

The Physiotherapy Department in the Northern service, form part of the broader Therapy Team which is at the forefront of innovation and development, in both our services and our people. By joining the team, you can expect to be invested in, supported and given the tools you need to succeed in your role and progress in your career.

We are able to offer excellent experience in all core rotations, including; musculoskeletal outpatients, orthopaedics, surgical, medical and rehabilitation wards, ICU, neurology, and community placements. The rotation programme is designed to consolidate and build on graduate skills and academic knowledge by participating in Continual Professional Development and other training opportunities. This provides both an excellent service to the local community and a positive learning environment from which to grow and develop your clinical and professional skills.

Musculoskeletal out-patient team

The Musculoskeletal out-patient department offer rotations at the North Devon Hospital Site and at Bideford Community Hospital. It is a busy department and you will learn from working alongside an experienced workforce and in a variety of different settings including the physiotherapy OP gym and hydrotherapy pool.

Inpatient team

The inpatient team at NDDH offer rotations within medical, surgical, and ICU specialities. The team run a robust competency and in-service training programme, buddy system and clinical simulation suite sessions to support new Band 5’s to develop the necessary skills to contribute to the on-call rota.

Neuro rehab team

The Neuro rehab team work across in-patient, community (ESD) and OP settings to provide specialist, evidence-based Neuro rehab to patients following stroke or other neurological diagnosis. Whilst on rotation within the service you will work with an innovative and dynamic team who continuously review models of delivery to provide services that optimise rehab opportunities for our patients.

Community team

The community service has been central to the redesign of pathways following the pandemic. They offer rotations within the Barnstaple community team and Ilfracombe community team and form a vital link between primary care and secondary care, NHS, social services and the voluntary sector. On this rotation you will learn to address the holistic needs of the patient in their home environment and the importance of integration within wider services.

Innovation

Innovation is central to therapies at the Royal Devon, demonstrated by the implementation of several new initiatives and the development of non-traditional roles in recent years including a Research and Innovation Lead. We are not afraid of adopting new techniques, as shown by the introduction of our ultrasound-guided injection therapy in Orthopaedic and Neurology pathways.

Supporting you

For those joining the Royal Devon University hospital Trust, the Preceptorship Programme has been developed to support the preceptee during their transition from student to newly registered practitioner. It incorporates a buddy system which was nominated for a National Award. Overall the 12-month programme aims to be supportive and to facilitate the further development of professional knowledge, skills and values.

Career development and progression

Training and development opportunities are in high supply here, whether you are interested in clinical or leadership development, courses, secondments or placements. We’ll support you in finding the best way to grow. There has been the recent introduction of consultant AHP’s within physiotherapy, first contact practitioners working in primary care settings and clinical educator posts across all specialities to name but a few.

Working Pattern: This role is for 37.5 hours per week, plus weekend working and on call requirements. We have a flexible working policy that we are happy to discuss suitable options for you and the department.
