More detail about the role
Revision Hip Clinical Nurse Specialist
Patients undergoing low volume high complexity surgeries such as revision hip and knee replacements require more support and care coordination than patients undergoing less complex procedures. Following the recent implementation of Revision Knee Networks across England other specialties are now developing similar care networks. An important role within these networks is the clinical nurse specialist.
The complex orthopaedic CNS will provide compassionate, patient-centred care for patients undergoing complex orthopaedic surgery or experiencing complications following orthopaedic surgery. The post-holder will be assigned to a specific sub-specialty but will be part of a wider CNS group to ensure that the service is seamless for patients regardless of specialty. This nursing role requires close working collaboration with all members of the orthopaedic team, together with the wider MDT, across Trauma and Orthopaedics and Microbiology. A key aspect of the role is working with other units performing complex orthopaedic surgery across the region and supporting them to meet the requirements of relevant national standards and key performance indicators.
The successful postholder will be expected to support patients throughout their pathway and offer additional support and guidance where there is a need identified. The postholder will also support the speciality clinical lead to develop appropriate non-operative support offered in line with national standards and relevant key performance indicators. A principal part of this role is the coordination of regular multidisciplinary team meetings which are well established but require dedicated support to ensure a timely and consistent approach.
There will also be a requirement to undertake data collection and submission on a regular basis, it is therefore crucial that the postholder has good IT skills and values the importance of attention to detail. The successful postholder will ideally have experience of caring for this patient cohort either in a ward or outpatient setting, have experience and interest in wound care, be willing to advance their own practice, work collaboratively, have excellent interpersonal skills and have the attributes that make them a valued team member.
The postholder will also be expected to provide education and training to staff both locally and regionally as well as provide education to patients and their families at preoperative education classes. They may also be called upon for advice and guidance by a variety of health professionals, as well as patients, for matters relating to postoperative care and treatment plans for patient with periprosthetic joint infection.
Working Pattern: 37.5 hours per week over 4/5 days
