Role Summary

  • Be responsible for the delivery of the clinical trial portfolio.
  • Ensure that the delivery of studies meet requirements with regards to the Department of Health’s Research Governance Framework for Health & Social Care and the EU Clinical Trials Directive by implementing quality systems.
  • Manage research performance and study timelines of relevant studies.
  • Collaborate with other Trusts and organisations within the region to improve research delivery.
  • Be responsible for the care of research participants within the relevant sphere of practice and use opportunities to provide health promotion and patient education.
  • Use relevant clinical knowledge to screen and identify patients suitable for clinical research using inclusion and exclusion criteria and utilising NHS records, screening clinics, visiting wards and outpatients and using Trust IT systems and databases.
  • Have an awareness of the income stream relevant to Clinical Trials and work within, local and Trust wide financial and budgetary guidelines.
  • Clinical knowledge within a relevant sphere of practice is required to enable screening against specified inclusion/exclusion criteria for recruitment.
  • Post-holder will need to have relevant clinical knowledge and the ability to critically evaluate participant’ progression through research pathways in order to respond and refer appropriately.
  • Be responsible for managing and organising own day-to-day activities and workload, liaising with the senior research nurse and working within the team to ensure the portfolio remains covered at times of leave.
  • Participate in Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training.
  • Valid driving license or means of travel to community hospital (Whipton).

We are looking for a Registered Nurse who is interested in working within the area of Clinical Trials. This is a substantive part-time position within our Gastroenterology Research Team. The Gastroenterology department have embedded research as a core part of the multi-disciplinary team and we have an engaged and enthusiastic group of clinicians who have a passion for Inflammatory Bowel Disease research in particular alongside other conditions in the speciality. The research team actively contribute to the clinical MDT meetings, attend outpatient clinics, the infusion suite (for which short distance travel to Whipton community hospital is periodically required), endoscopy department in addition to working in dedicated research areas to raise awareness of, recruit to and run clinical trial activities. 
Working within Clinical Trials is a challenging yet rewarding role which involves working on studies that will potentially impact on patient treatments of the future. Many of our trials, both observational and interventional, involve regular contact with patients and you will be involved in their journey of care whilst part of research and have the opportunity to build positive and rewarding professional relationships.
For this post we are looking for a candidate with established clinical skills with IV administration being desirable (training can be provided). IT literacy is essential. Any prior knowledge and experience in Research and or Gastroenterology would be desirable however a full research and clinical area induction will be provided on appointment.

Working Pattern:  22.5 hours between 9:00 and 17:00, there will be some flexibility for the successful candidate to work within these hours to fulfil this part-time position. There may be some occasional requirement to work evenings or at a weekend, this would be dependent on the trial and the patient availability but is not the norm.
