More detail about the role

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Walk-in Centre at Sidwell Street, part of the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. The Walk-in Centre provides assessment and treatment for patients presenting with unplanned attendances, including minor injuries and minor illnesses, and plays a key role in supporting patient flow and reducing demand on Emergency Departments.

The Receptionist is a vital part of the patient journey, acting as the first point of contact for all patients and visitors. The post holder will provide a professional, efficient, and compassionate reception service, ensuring that all patients are welcomed, booked in promptly, and directed appropriately within the service.

A key aspect of the role is the accurate and timely registration of patients, ensuring all demographic details are recorded correctly to support safe clinical assessment and care. The post holder will manage a high volume of unplanned attendances, often during busy and pressurised periods, and must be able to prioritise effectively while maintaining attention to detail.

The role requires the ability to remain calm and professional under pressure, particularly when dealing with patients who may be unwell, distressed, or anxious. Strong communication skills are essential to ensure clear, respectful, and reassuring interactions with patients, relatives, and the wider multidisciplinary team.

The Receptionist must also demonstrate the confidence and judgement to escalate concerns appropriately, including identifying when a patient’s presentation may require urgent clinical attention and alerting clinical staff without delay.

In addition to front-facing duties, the role includes general administrative and clerical tasks to support the smooth running of the service and patient flow through the department, helping to minimise delays and ensure an effective patient experience.

The successful candidate will be proactive, adaptable, and able to work both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment. A flexible approach, alongside a commitment to confidentiality, customer care, and high standards of service delivery, is essential.

Working Pattern: 15.5 hours per week on a 3 week rolling rota. Weekday evenings 4pm-8:30pm, alternative weekends either 8am-2pm or 2pm to 8pm.

Interview Date: To be confirmed
