Patient Flow Coordinator

Role Summary

The Patient Flow Co‑ordinator works within the Emergency Department to support the safe, timely and efficient movement of patients through the department. Working closely with the Nurse in Charge, clinical teams, site management and wards, the role focuses on reducing delays, supporting admissions, transfers and discharges, and escalating capacity issues to maintain patient flow and performance against waiting‑time targets.

The post holder coordinates communication across multidisciplinary teams, monitors referrals and bed availability, arranges patient transport, and actively supports operational decision‑making during periods of high demand. The role requires excellent communication, organisational and problem‑solving skills, along with the ability to work calmly and effectively in a fast‑paced, acute clinical environment while maintaining courtesy, professionalism and sensitivity when dealing with patients and relatives.

Patient Flow Co‑ordinator – Emergency Department (Band 3) - Out of Hours

We are looking for a motivated and organised Patient Flow Co‑ordinator to join our busy and ever expanding Emergency Department team. This is a key role supporting the safe, timely movement of patients through the department.

Working closely with the Nurse in Charge and multidisciplinary teams, you will help monitor patient flow, support admissions, transfers and discharges, escalate capacity issues, and arrange transport where required. You will communicate regularly with wards, site management, clinical staff, patients and relatives to minimise delays and support delivery of care.

The ideal candidate will have strong communication and organisational skills, be able to work calmly under pressure, and thrive in a busy acute environment. Previous NHS or administrative experience is essential.

This role offers the opportunity to make a real difference to patient experience within a supportive team.

Working Pattern: 17hrs pr week (ave) on a 3 week rolling rota
