Role Summary

  • To provide a timely and efficient service to a busy Acute Medical Unit.
  • Working as a member of the team in the Acute Medical Unit (AMU) and Medical Triage Unit MTU) collaborating with key teams/department to ensure the smooth flow of patients through the Unit
  • To work specifically within the three locations on the Unit and to operate and maintain, with minimum supervision, a range of clerical and administrative duties, providing a first point of contact for Trust staff and visitors reporting to the AMU and MTU
  • To track patient progress through the Unit
  • To maintain the crucial link between the Emergency Department PFC  and MTU/AMU Ward Clerk
  • Please note that the workstation for this position is in a front line clinical area and therefore the post holder will be exposed to patients who may present to AMU/MTU in an a aggressive, distressed or severely ill state
  • Please note that this position requires a relatively high level of physical activity (i.e. walking)
  • Working to a four week fixed rolling rota
  • The post holder will be required to undertake additional hours to cover for colleagues during periods of annual/sick leave/bank holidays

About Us

OUT OF HOURS WARD CLERK

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated person to join the Acute Medical Unit in a ward clerk role.  The Acute Medical Unit takes patients who are referred from the Emergency Department and General Practice (GP) services and we are based at the RD&E main hospital site.

Our admin team is made up of an Admin Services Manager, Admin Line Manager, and a Team Leader and there are 21 members of our friendly dedicated admin staff.

In addition we have a team of Ward Consultants and Doctors as well as Ward Matrons and Nurses.

The Acute Medical Unit deals with approximately 21,000 admissions per year and is a busy, exciting and stimulating place to work.  You will deal with referrals from the Emergency Department and also from GPs, admitting patients onto the ward or into clinics and dealing with their subsequent pathway through the hospital.

You must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a pleasant telephone manner.  It is essential that you have the ability to interact with patients calmly, sensitively and efficiently both on the telephone and in person.

You must be able to use your own initiative, prioritising your workload to meet the changing needs of the department, as the Acute Medical Unit is a high pressure fast paced environment.

Working pattern:  16:00 - 22:00 - 21 hours average per week on a rolling 4 week fixed pattern rota.  (Alternating weekdays and every other weekend)

Key to this role is the ability to be flexible to cover periods of annual leave and sickness

Salary: £20,270 - £21,318 (pro rata) + enhanced pay for working out of hours (2000-0800 and weekends)
