Role Summary

This post is an Orthopaedic Physiotherapy Advanced Practice post based at North Devon District Hospital. The post holder will working across the Trauma and Elective pathway from admission, discharge and when appropriate into the Community.

The post requires a Masters educational level which has been mapped to all the outcomes of the Multi Professional Advanced Practice Framework and Health Education England. It would be desirable to have a digital badge.

However, there is the opportunity for this post to be a developmental Band 7 to 8a role to give the successful candidate the opportunity to achieve the advanced practice competencies and / or masters training required within a defined time period.

The post holder will provide Clinical Leadership, monitor, lead improvements to standards of care through:

  • Supervision of practice
  • Clinical Audit
  • Implementation of evidence based practice
  • Teaching and support of colleagues.
  • Provision of professional leadership.

Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is looking to recruit an experienced, highly skilled and forward-thinking individual to provide Advanced Clinical Leadership to the Orthopaedic Therapy Team. The post holder will drive forward the transformation of current pathways for elective, trauma and orthopaedic supported discharge services, optimise major trauma rehabilitation pathways, support any changes to the National Hip Fracture standards, and drive to further reduce length of stay. The Orthopaedic Therapy team is an integrated team of Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists and works closely with the wider Multidisciplinary team. 

The post is delivered over seven days on a rolling roster. This will include extended hours of working on a roster basis up until 8pm to provide clinical assessments and treatment to patients in elective surgery with key drivers to support day zero discharges.

The Orthopaedic team sits within the Acute Inpatient Therapy team alongside the other sub-teams of Surgical (Critical care, Surgery, Paediatrics), Respiratory, and Medical Rehabilitation services (Frailty, Gastroenterology and Pathway 2 Rehabilitation beds).  

You will be responsible for ensuring excellence with in the team by initiating and participating in evidence-based projects and audit, to improve both immediate and future quality of care.

About You

The post holder will be able to demonstrate an extensive range of specialist knowledge, experience and expertise in Orthopaedics, which will include masters level specialist training and evidence of advanced practice skills.

You will oversee the education and staff competency in orthopaedic rehabilitation ensuring it is operationally sound and has high standards of clinical governance. As part of the role there will be a need to provide advanced physiotherapy advice to the team and other disciplines / agencies.

Innovation is central to Therapies at the Royal Devon demonstrated by the implementation of several new initiatives and the development of non-traditional roles in recent years including a Research and Innovation Lead. The Orthopaedic Therapy team has been actively involved in supporting patients to be discharged to their original residence using the Orthopaedic supported discharge team, pre-assessments for elective surgery to support early discharges and use of hydrotherapy as a treatment option.

Working pattern: 37.5 hours per week on a 7 day rolling roster, including roster to work up until 8pm. This working pattern is shared across the team. We have a flexible working policy that we are happy to discuss suitable options for you and the department.
