Role Summary

An opportunity for an experienced Orthopaedic Physiotherapist to work in Trauma, Elective and Orthopaedic Supported Discharge providing clinical and operational leadership. You are required to be able to assess and treat patients with Orthopaedics and support the ongoing development of a team of Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Staff.

Main duties of the job:

  • To provide Clinical and Operational leadership.
  • To work with the Service lead, Orthopaedic Physiotherapy Advanced Practitioner / Team lead, Occupational Therapy Advanced Practitioner and the Multidisciplinary team.
  • To ensure quality, clinical effectiveness and patient safety.
  • To be actively involved in Service developments in line with local and national drivers and evidence bases practice.
  • To be involved in an active training programme.

We are looking for a dynamic Physiotherapy Advanced Practitioner to work alongside the Orthopaedic Therapy Team lead to provide clinical and operational leadership. The post holder will work across Trauma, Elective and Orthopaedic Supported discharge team, the team is part of an integrated team of Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists.  The post holder will work closely with the wider Multidisciplinary team. 

The post is delivered over seven days on a rolling roster. This will include extended hours of working on a roster basis up until 8 pm to provide clinical assessments and treatment to patients in elective surgery with key drivers to support day zero discharges.

The Orthopaedic team sits within the Acute Inpatient Therapy team alongside the other sub teams of Surgical (Critical care, Surgery, Paediatrics), Respiratory, and Medical Rehabilitation services (Frailty, Gastroenterology and Pathway 2 Rehabilitation beds).

You will be required to ensure delivery of high quality patient centred care measured by clinical effectiveness, patient safety and patient experience in line with national guidance.

You will be expected to work as an autonomous practitioner, be up to date with evidence-based practice and be able to offer advanced assessment and treatment skills of patients.

The post holder will be required to work with the other Advanced Practitioners to provide teaching of competencies to enable staff to work on Trauma and Orthopaedics and provide an education programme for the Specialist Physiotherapists to enable staff to maintain competencies and the development depth of knowledge.  

You will be responsible for ensuring excellence with in the team by initiating and participating in evidence-based projects and audit, to improve both immediate and future quality of care.

About You

You will be required to have experience at working in Orthopaedics. As part of the role there will be a need to provide advanced physiotherapy advice to the team and other disciplines / agencies.  You will need to be able to cope with demands on your time with frequent interruptions.

Training and development and Career Progression

The trust is keen to support staff to develop strong leadership and clinical skills through clinical supervision, internal and external continuing professional developments.

There is a requirement of this post holder to study at MSC level. We are continuing to develop links with Universities to support staff with training and development.

Working pattern: 7 day rolling roster, including roster to work up until 8 pm. This working pattern is shared across the team.

Innovation is central to therapies at the Royal Devon, demonstrated by the implementation of several new initiatives and the development of non-traditional roles in recent years including a Research and Innovation Lead.   The Orthopaedic Therapy team has been actively involved in supporting patients to be discharged to their original residence using the Orthopaedic supported discharge team, pre assessments for elective surgery to support early discharges and use of hydrotherapy as a treatment option.
