This post is a Orthopaedic Physiotherapy Advanced post providing Clinical and Operational Leadership across Trauma and Elective Orthopaedics. The post holder will need to be able provide complex assessments and treatment programmes including for patients with polytrauma and spinal injuries. There will be a requirement to provide an education programme for the team, and work with the Orthopaedic Clinical Educator and AHP Trauma audit and research network coordinator(TARN) to enable staff to meet relevant competencies regarding collars, braces and rehabilitation pathways. 

North Devon District Hospital is one of the four trauma units cross the Peninsula and is actively involved in the Trauma audit and research network. 

The Orthopaedic team sits with in the Acute Inpatient Therapy Team alongside the other sub teams of Surgical (Critical Care, Surgery, Paediatrics) , Respiratory and Health of Older people (Frailty). 

The Main duties of the job are: 

  • To provide Clinical and Operational Leadership.
  • To work with the Service lead, Orthopaedic Therapy Team lead, Senior Occupational Therapists and the Multidisciplinary team.
  • To ensure quality, clinical effectiveness and patient safety in line with national and local guidelines, including ensuring meeting the TARN key performance indicators. 
  • To be responsible for ensuring excellence with in the team by initiating and participating in evidence based projects and audit , to improve both immediate and future quality of care. 
  • To be actively involved in Service developments in line with local and national drivers and evidence based practice.
  • To be involved in an active training programme.

Training, Development and Innovation.  

The trust is keen to support staff to develop strong leadership and clinical skills through clinical supervision, internal and external continuing professional developments.

There is a requirement of this post holder to complete some post graduate MSC level training or equivalent. We are continuing to develop links with Universities to support staff with training and development.

Innovation is central to therapies at the Royal Devon, demonstrated by the implementation of several new initiatives and the development of non-traditional roles in recent years including a Research and Innovation Lead.   The Orthopaedic Therapy team has been actively involved in supporting patients to be discharged to their original residence using the Orthopaedic supported discharge team, pre assessments for elective surgery to support early discharges and use of hydrotherapy as a treatment option.

Working Pattern: 7 day rolling pattern across the month which will include working one weekend in a month. There will be a requirement to work 1 or 2 shifts per month on a Monday or Wednesday 12 - 20.00 to support day zero discharges.

Pay: The salary advertised for this position reflects the Agenda for Change 2025/6 rates, inclusive of a 3.6% pay award which will be implemented later this year. If you join before the implementation date, the pay award will be backdated to your start date. Until then, remuneration will be based on the 2024/5 pay bandings (Pay scales for 2024/25 | NHS Employers)
