Role Summary
- Undertakes Ophthalmic Telephone & referral Triage following patient assessment and categorising guidelines in line with NICE guidance for macular conditions.
- Assess patients, plans and implements care, provides specialist advice and maintain associated records for patients in the macular practitioner service.
- Participate in setting, monitoring and evaluating standards of care in partnership with other members of the ophthalmic multidisciplinary team to ensure the delivery of holistic, evidence based and clinically effective specialist macular services.
- Undertake intra vitreal injection clinics for anti VEGF treatment for various macular conditions in line with agreed local protocol and NICE Guidelines.
- Provide education and training to a range of associate allied health care professionals within the macular service.
- Ability to Work autonomously within local unit agreed competencies, departmental guidelines and protocols without direct supervision; in addition to working closely with all members of the multi-disciplinary team.
- Work within a variety of sub speciality ophthalmology clinics to meet the developing needs of the service appropriate to the post holders area of expertise.

An exciting opportunity for an advanced ophthalmic practitioner Band 6 in the macular / medical retinal team has arisen for a highly motivated, innovative and enthusiastic individual to work within this multi professional Opthalmology team.
The successful candidate will be required to act as an autonomous practitioner in the medical retinal /macular service and participate in diagnostic virtual macular review pathway clinics . In addition to providing patient assessment, diagnosis & treatment including independent prescribing for the treatment & monitoring of existing patients, the post holder will be required to perform intra vitreal injection of Anti VEGF under agreed competencies.
The service is expending and is now providing a more comprehensive community-based service, for our intravitreal service and virtual diagnostic review pathways are being further developed to provide a new innovative service delivery model at the Exeter Nightingale Hospital, Heavitree hospital and Axminister Hospital .
The role also includes provision of support and mentoring departmental clinical staff, to ensure ophthalmic patients receive high standards of care. You will work with the service head, and ophthalmology clinical managers to deliver robust clinical care for patients attending the Medical Retinal & Macular Service both at WEEU Wonford and the community sites on a regular basis.
Ideally, you will have ophthalmic experience however this is not essential. A training package will be provided to help you provide the highest levels of care. You will be an organised, friendly, kind and compassionate individual. You will have excellent IT skills to be able to undertake audits, update MyCare (our patient record system), and support other team members.
