Role Summary

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust as an Occupational Therapy Practitioner and be part of our specialist Stroke rehabilitation team based at the Royal Devon & Exeter main site (Wonford).

This position (30 hours / week) will work closely with the Team Lead Occupational Therapist, ward multidisciplinary team and Discharge Co-ordinator to provide an effective interdisciplinary service with assessment, diagnosis, treatment and advice to patients and their carers. The caseload will include patients with a wide range of acute and chronic conditions, many having complex needs.

The post holder will assess and formulate treatment plans to assist with the rehabilitation and discharge of patients following admission to the ward. The post holder will have strong assessment skills and be able to support physical and cognitive recovery through functional rehabilitation activities

This position is based as part of the OT therapy team at the Therapy Department, located on the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital site.

The post holder is responsible for providing Occupational Therapy assessment & treatment of a specified caseload within the Acute Stroke and stroke rehab ward environment. The post holder will be provided with comprehensive training to gain appropriate knowledge and skills. Patient management will include: assessment and information gathering to identify patient needs; physical and cognitive assessments, development of treatment plans and review of progress at regular intervals; and delivery of care and rehabilitation. 

Treatment and assessment activities will include: completing stroke specific cognitive and mood assessments; the assessment and management of impairments of upper limb function arising from stroke; utilising the practice of personal activities of daily living (washing and dressing) and domestic tasks as part of physical and cognitive rehabilitation plans; and educating & advising patients and their families about their situation and options for the future. The post holder will work alongside the therapy teams and provide close liaison with family, carers and external agencies to ensure safe and effective transfer of patient therapy from the in-patient rehabilitation setting to other services. The post-holder will liaise closely with senior staff across the team.

This post is static within the clinical speciality area of the Stroke Occupational Therapy, a service working flexibly over 7 days including bank holidays.

Working Pattern: 8:15-16:30 Monday to Friday, Weekends and bank holidays as required.
