OT Assistant Practitioner - Elective Orthopaedics

Role Summary

This position is based as part of the OT/PT therapy team at the Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Centre (PEOC), located on the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital site. The post holder will support the physiotherapy and occupational therapy teams to deliver functional assessments and implement treatment and advice to ward based patients. This will include hands–on physical treatment, functional task practice and consideration of home circumstances. The post-holder will be responsible for assisting with timely and appropriate discharges from the ward or transfer to other services as appropriate. The post-holder will liaise closely with senior staff across the team.

The post holder is responsible for providing Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy assessment, diagnosis & treatment of a specified caseload within the Trauma & Orthopaedic Ward environment.

Patient management will include the assessment and the delivery of care; including liaison with patients, family, appropriate members of the MDT and external agencies. This post will involve delegation and supervision of appropriate tasks to bands 2 and 3.

This post is static within the clinical speciality area of the orthopaedic Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy service working flexibly over 7 days including evenings and bank holidays.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Elective Orthopaedic service at the Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Hospital as band 4 Therapy Assistant Practitioner. 

The Royal Devon University Healthcare Trust is a welcoming Trust, focused on valuing a person’s differences and encouraging them to grow and flourish in their role in healthcare. It is set in one of the most beautiful areas of the UK with easy access to the coast and the Dartmoor national park. 

This 37.5 hour/week position will support the physiotherapy and occupational therapy teams by providing hands–on physical treatment, functional task practice and consideration of home circumstances to assist in the assessment, diagnosis & treatment of a specified caseload within the Trauma & Orthopaedic Ward environment. There may also be an opportunity to assist the OT service in the pre-operative assessment of patients.

The post holder will work alongside the therapy teams and provide close liaison with family, carers and external agencies to ensure safe and effective transfer of patient therapy from the in-patient setting to home or other services as appropriate. The aim will be to support same day discharge where possible.

The post includes regular weekend and bank holidays, long days and commitments across seven days.

Working Pattern: Between 8am and 8pm across 7 days including bank holidays

This is a fixed term contract until March 2023.  For current NHS employees this post could be a secondment opportunity.
