Role Summary
The purpose of the job is to assist the Biomedical Scientists (BMS) by way of carrying out procedures in order aid the provision of a high quality Microbiology service at North Devon District Hospital.
- Receive and book-in patient samples for Microbiological examination.
- Process patient samples including the inoculation of agar plates and preparation of slides for microscopic examination.
- Use of automated equipment for the generation results for validation by BMS.
- Receive, handle and dispatch microbiology samples to reference laboratories.
- Participate in the training of all MLA duties including Pathology stores and autoclave.
- Prepare and process quality assurance samples, with guidance from the Quality lead.
- Participate in stock control.
- Use of the department’s computer system in all aspects of the role.

This is an exciting opportunity for you to join our busy Microbiology team based at North Devon District Hospital in Barnstaple, Devon.
You will be working as part of a small team busy team, assisting the Biomedical Scientists in the investigation of patient samples. You will rotate throughout the laboratory and your role will include checking sample integrity prior to analysis, processing clinical specimens for Bacteriological culture and operating and maintaining laboratory equipment in Bacteriology and Molecular departments. You will also undertake other tasks including receiving specimens, booking specimens onto the laboratory computer system, answering telephone queries and laboratory housekeeping duties.
Working Pattern: Usual working hours are Monday-Friday 09:00-17:30. Working on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays, on a rotational basis is also required for this post.
