Role Summary

  • To form part of the team delivering a high-quality Clinical Genetic service for the population of Devon and Cornwall
  • This role is to collect and prepare information about patients and their families, prior to or after appointments with Clinical Genetics Consultants or Genetic Nurse Counsellors.
  • The post-holder will undertake data inputting from the family history sheets, obtain consent where needed from family members, obtain information to confirm diagnoses in patients and their relatives (e.g. medical records, genetic test results, cancer registry, post-mortem reports)
  • To obtain and collate other information requested by the clinical team in order to deliver a timely and high-quality service to the patients.
  • The post-holder will also provide support to staff in data management for audit purposes.

The Peninsula Clinical Genetics Service are looking to recruit an enthusiastic, highly organised and motivated individual to join the team as a Family History Coordinator on a 12 month fixed term contract.

The service covers the South West Peninsula (Devon and Cornwall) with the main office being in Exeter and satellite offices in Plymouth and Truro. The service is hosted by the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and this post will be based at Heavitree Hospital. 

You will undertake general administration and clerical duties to coordinate and implement the process by which comprehensive family histories are compiled.  To achieve this, you will need to be able to plan, prioritise and organise your own workload efficiently and effectively.  We work to tight deadlines to ensure the best possible care, so timely, accurate completion and maintenance of records is essential. The work includes data entry to a bespoke database system (TrakGene), for which full training will be provided.

A key part of the role is liaising with relevant local, regional and national registries, clinical, and pathology departments to request sensitive and at times complex information, and ensuring this is received in a timely manner, using influencing and negotiating skills to pursue as necessary.

You will also be required to provide information and assistance by telephone to patients, carers and relatives in a sympathetic and caring manner.  Previous customer service experience is essential as our team is committed to providing an excellent response to the people who access our service.

You must be a team player with good communication and interpersonal skills, will have experience of working in an administrative role, and be able to engage and work effectively with colleagues within the multidisciplinary team. 

Excellent organisational and general IT skills are essential and training will be provided to enable you to use Trust IT systems as required.  Medical terminology and knowledge gained from working in a hospital/NHS environment will be advantageous.  The role may also include providing support to the wider Admin and Clerical team, as required.

Working Pattern: Monday - Friday; 8am - 4pm

This is a fixed term contract for 12 months. For current NHS employees this post could be a secondment opportunity.
