Primary and Revision Total Elbow Replacement surgery is considered low volume, high complexity surgery and as such, to concentrate experience and expertise, will now be performed in regional centres. Exeter has been identified as the regional centre in Devon and Cornwall and is looking for a Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) to support this patient group as well as coordinate regional MDT discussions and ensure continuity of care.
The Trauma and Orthopaedic Team in Exeter already has experience of centralisation of specialist practice (e.g. revision knee networks) so is well equipped to support the implementation of this unique role and develop, support and encourage the successful applicant to flourish in this post. The CNS role in orthopaedics is varied and busy and requires collaborative working with all members of the Shoulder and Elbow Unit, together with the wider multidisciplinary team, across Trauma and Orthopaedics and Microbiology. A key aspect of the role is liaising with centres across the region supporting them to meet the requirements of relevant surgical procedural guidelines, key performance indicators and local and national standards.
The successful post holder will be expected to support patients throughout their pathway and offer additional support and guidance where there is a need identified. The post holder will also support the clinical lead and lead clinical nurse specialist to develop appropriate non-operative support offered in line with national standards and emerging evidence as well as patient need identified locally.
It is crucial that the post holder has good IT skills and values the importance of attention to detail as there will be the requirement to collect accurate data for the benefit of research and audit. The successful post holder will ideally have experience of caring for this patient cohort either in a ward or outpatient setting, have experience and interest in wound care, be willing to advance their own practice, work collaboratively, have excellent interpersonal skills and have the attributes that make them a valued team member including the ability to work flexibly.
The post holder will also be expected to provide education and training to staff both locally and regionally as well as provide education to patients and their families at preoperative education classes. They may also be called upon for advice and guidance by a variety of health professionals, as well as patients, for matters relating to postoperative care and treatment plans for patient with periprosthetic joint infection.
Working pattern: 30 hours per week over 4 days. Monday must be a working day until 5pm.
