Role Summary

  1. The post holder is a key member of the Microbiology Senior Management Team and will provide specialist expertise and deputise for the Microbiology Services Manager.

 

  1. To have delegated managerial responsibility for the delivery of 24/7 Microbiology services across RDUH sites, with particular focus on the North Devon Laboratory.

 

  1. To be the Bacteriology Technical Lead Biomedical Scientist across all RHUH sites, provide professional and technical leadership. To maintain HCPC registration and competence as a Biomedical Scientist and participate in departmental rotas if required.

 

  1. To have delegated managerial responsibility for Workforce Management including strategic planning and development, recruitment, staff performance, appraisal, Continuous Professional Development, training, discipline/grievance management.

 

  1. To oversee the production and maintenance of new and existing Standard Operating Procedures within the department, proactively seeking opportunities to improve standardisation, integration and operational productivity across the RDUH sites.

 

  1. To proactively contribute to the development and implementation of departmental strategy, financial plans, targets, cost improvements, policy, accreditation and service and methodology improvements.

About the role

Due to retirement, we are delighted to be able to recruit to a Deputy Laboratory Manager to work within the Clinical Microbiology department based at the North Devon District Hospital laboratory, Barnstaple.

About us

The Department of Microbiology within Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (RDUH) is comprises two laboratories, based at the North Devon District Hospital (NDDH) and Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital (RD&E).

The Department provides a comprehensive Microbiology service offering diagnostic Bacteriology, Serology, Molecular Microbiology, Parasitology and Mycology to the RDUH hospitals and communities across Northern and Eastern Devon. The Department employs approximately 80 staff and carries out in excess of 600,000 tests per annum. The department has achieved UKAS accreditation to ISO 15189 and is an IBMS approved training laboratory. The service operates 24/7 including weekends and overnight cover is provided by an on-call service.

This vacancy is for a Band 8a Deputy Laboratory Manager, who will provide local operational management for the Barnstaple Microbiology laboratory. The postholder will also act as the Bacteriology technical lead in addition to having delegated responsibility for Workforce Management across both RDUH sites. The post is full time, although part-time would be considered.

Working Pattern: Monday-Friday 09:00-17:30
