Consultant in Acute Medicine

Role Summary

We are looking for a new consultant colleague to join our team in Acute Medicine at the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (RDUH).  You will be joining a team of forward-thinking doctors in a dynamic trust, able to effect changes in our service.

As a consultant group we mostly have young families and so promote part time working and diverse portfolios to make our jobs balanced and sustainable. There are 14 Acute Medical Consultants working within the department 9 of which are dedicated Acute medical consultants and 5 dual specialise of which include Endocrine, Gastroenterology and Renal. Of the Acute Medical Consultants, the special interests are broad and include Perioperative Medicine, Primary Care, Palliative Care, Education (undergrad and simulation), Leadership and high dependency care.

Acute medicine has been consistently dynamic in its evolution embracing changes in practice quickly which is recognised in high quality bench marking and evaluations of standards. The service Is broken up into distinct areas: SDEC, Frailty SDEC, Ambulatory Care, Acute Hospital at Home, and AMU. This post is part of an expansion where we will increase the size of our SDEC and create a dedicated Enhanced Care Area (HDU) in the AMU. Both of these areas have been funded and are under current development with new estates build.   We are, as a department, motivated to also increase our offering in Research, Quality Improvement, Digital Health) and Ultrasound. These activities would be supported in job plans.

Exeter AMU is constantly improving and has seen significant investment over the last few years. It is a medium sized Acute Medical Unit (AMU) of 50 beds plus 2 trolley spaces, 44 of which are monitored. Our developed SDEC includes 6 rooms and 4 ambulatory cardiac bays for advanced interventions along with a dedicated triage area of 3 trolleys for all referrals – all of which will enlarge with the development. We also have a separate ambulatory clinic area for elective procedures and returns. Our Acute Hospital at Home team support discharges and allow outreach into the community.

We offer point of care ultrasound with rapid access to diagnostics and procedures and have developed innovative ways of remote home monitoring having been awarded several Digital Health grants. This has been recognised with HSJ innovation award nominations.  There are 6 dedicated registrars in Acute Medicine and further rotational registrars support, a large cohort of resident doctors and a developing AP/PA workforce of 12.  As you can see we are not a department or trust that likes to stay still.

Exeter is a brilliant place to live. We have two of the most famous national parks on our doorstep and the beautiful Devon coastline. Outdoor activities are a major attraction with good surfing, kite surfing, road and mountain-biking, kayaking and hiking. The city itself has been voted one of the UKs most desirable places to live with a great selection of shops and independent restaurants mixed with the local farming it’s a foodies dream.

Exeter has excellent transport connections to Cornwall, Bristol and London and a local airport serving Europe.  As one of the most desirable and fastest growing cities it is very family orientated with great schools and offers a vast number of family-focused activities and events making it an ideal place to bring up children.

We are committed to offering genuinely workable job plans, recognising that Acute Medicine is a challenging specialty.  The RD&E offers many non-clinical opportunities to make this a reality which we would be keen to discuss should you wish to apply.
