Role Summary
Consultant Vascular Surgeon – South Devon and Exeter Vascular Network We are excited to announce the creation of a new substantive consultant post within the South Devon and Exeter Vascular Network. This position offers an excellent opportunity to join a dedicated team of six full-time equivalent consultants working across the network, which includes the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust. The network serves a vascular population of 700,000 people and provides renal access services for 1.2 million. The Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital serves as the Vascular Hub, with Torbay as the spoke site. We also have community hospitals in Heavitree, Exmouth, Tiverton, Whipton, Newton Abbot, and others, providing clinic capacity and day case operating services.
Role Overview: The successful candidate will be an integral part of the team and will be expected to manage a full range of urgent and elective vascular conditions. This includes open and endovascular surgical techniques, venous treatments, and renal access surgery, all of which are essential to this role. Additionally, the network regularly supports specialties such as ENT, orthopaedics, spinal, and plastic surgery.
Key Responsibilities:
• Vascular Emergency On-Call Rota: Participate in the on-call rota for the Exeter and Torbay vascular network, providing care for acute vascular admissions, urgent referrals, and in-hours and out-of-hours emergency care.
• Vascular Ward & Emergency Operating: Manage inpatients on the 21-bed dedicated Vascular ward, oversee CEPOD emergency operating, and assess vascular admissions in the Emergency Department and Acute Surgical Assessment Clinic (ESAC).
• Outpatient Clinics & Day Surgery: The role involves conducting general vascular and specialist outpatient clinics (e.g., renal access, multidisciplinary diabetic foot), and leading day surgery lists. Outpatient clinics and surgeries may be held at spoke sites or community hospitals.
• Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Actively engage in weekly multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings, including twice-weekly vascular MDTs and weekly microbiology MDTs.
Support & Facilities:
• You will be supported by a rota of resident doctors (F1 to Registrar) and a dedicated team, including two Vascular Practitioners at Torbay Hospital and vascular physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and amputee counsellors through Exeter Mobility Centre.
• You will work closely with Interventional Radiology colleagues, ensuring excellent collaborative care for patients.
• The Vascular Unit has a dedicated theatre five days a week, accommodating both elective and emergency procedures. A CEPOD theatre is available 24/7, supporting a wide range of specialties including general surgery, plastics, urology, ENT, and max-fax. A new Vascular Hybrid theatre is set to open in October 2025.
Professional Development: The network also offers opportunities for teaching, research, and leadership roles. The unit provides placements for medical students, foundation trainees, core surgical trainees, and both general and surgical higher surgical trainees. The successful candidate will have prior experience in teaching or research and will be encouraged to contribute to the development of the unit's educational and research programs. Ideal Candidate:

• Expertise in managing the full spectrum of vascular pathologies, including open and endovascular techniques, venous treatments, and renal access surgery.
• Ability to manage vascular emergencies and inpatient care.
• A collaborative, team-oriented approach, with a commitment to teaching and supporting junior doctors.
• A passion for contributing to the development of the unit’s education and/or research activities.
