Cancer Support Worker (Head, Neck and Thyroid Cancers)

Role Summary

The head, neck and thyroid cancer nurse specialist team are looking for a Cancer Support Worker to join their team. The successful candidate will  provide practical, emotional and administrative support to patients, families and carers throughout the cancer pathway. The role will help improve patient experience, reduce variation in care and free up clinical time for the specialist nurses. As in integral and valued member of the team, you will be supported through our comprehensive training and induction programme and our commitment to learning and development will satisfy even the most ambitious person.

  1. Patient Support

    • Acts as a key point of contact for patients during their cancer journey.

    • Provides information in an accessible way, reinforcing advice from clinical staff.

    • Offers emotional support and signposts patients to psychological, financial, or social services.

  2. Practical Care Coordination

    • Helps organise appointments, investigations, and follow-up.

    • Supports patients in understanding their treatment plans.

    • Assists in ensuring holistic needs assessments (HNAs) and care plans are completed.

  3. Administrative Support

    • Manages paperwork, databases, and patient tracking.

    • Ensures treatment summaries and care documents are coordinated.

  4. Supporting the Clinical Team

    • Works alongside Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNSs) and the wider multidisciplinary team (MDT).

    • Takes on tasks that do not require professional registration, allowing specialist nurses to focus on complex care.

  5. Promoting Self-Management

    • Encourages and supports patients in managing side effects, lifestyle changes, and follow-up care.

    • Guides patients toward support groups, digital resources, and rehabilitation services.

Working Pattern: Whilst we support flexible working to reach a healthy balance between home and work, the service needs will take precedence and the successful candidate will be required to work shift patterns that provide suitable cover [Service operates Monday to Friday during the hours of 8.30am and 6pm].
