Role Summary
Apprentice Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) will work towards becoming a Registered Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) by gaining a BSc (Hons) in Operating Department Practice. The Apprentice ODP will undertake an apprenticeship programme incorporating the Integrated Degree Apprenticeship Standards for Operating Department Practice. The apprenticeship programme combines academic and work-based learning; the Apprentice ODP will be fully supported to develop the skills required over the duration of the apprenticeship.
ODPs must continually make professional decisions to ensure the patient receives the best care before, during and after their surgery. ODPs also, ensure that the operating theatre environment is safe and effective; therefore, have expertise in the management of specialist equipment and materials in a highly technical environment, such as handling surgical instruments, checking anaesthetic equipment, moving patients and giving medication. ODPs must demonstrate professionalism, confidence, compassion, competence and effective judgement; being responsible for their decisions.

We have a new and exciting full-time training role starting in June 2024 as an Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) Apprentice and are looking for enthusiastic people to join the Theatre team. The training will involve a 3 year programme (38.5 months) with Birmingham City University (South West). Clinical placements are based at Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (Eastern) with tutorials on block release in Exeter. Upon completion of the course, you will hold a BSc (Hons) degree in Operating Department Practice.
The post holder will need to have prior knowledge of working within the healthcare environment and be able to demonstrate good organisational skills, be able to work within a multidiscipline team and enjoy a challenge.
You must also be able to work a typical roster pattern including out of hours shifts and weekends.
The post holder must be willing and able to undertake the necessary training required to complete the course.
Other essential criteria are as follows:
- Hold a completed care certificate (desirable)
- Be in agreement to work for the Trust for a minimum of 2 years upon successful course completion and registration with the Health and Care Professions Council.
- Be compliant with all mandatory training requirements.
- Be able to commit to fully attending the academic blocks and modules required, located at the University block
The admission requirements for this course at least three GCSEs at grade 4 (formerly grade C) in English language, mathematics and one other and either 112 UCAS points or a NVQ level 3 in healthcare or associated subject and a portfolio of evidence. Proof of qualifications are required. Please make this clear on your application.
Working Pattern: 37.5 hours per week, working various shift patterns
