To Work within the Radiology department as a trainee Radiographer under the Diagnostic Radiographer Apprenticeship programme and complete the full BSc Diagnostic Radiography qualification at the associated Higher Education Institution

Work under the supervision of a Registered Practitioner

As part of the multi-disciplinary team, the post holder will provide a key role in providing imaging, care and support to individuals as specified in standard radiographic protocols, or written care or service plans, in a range of environments.

The Apprentice Diagnostic Radiographer will be based in Medical Imaging at the Royal Devon and Exeter (Wonford) Hospital. They will also be allocated to work in the Community site hospitals and the Heavitree site as and when required. The post holder will also be required to take part in the extended working day and 7-day service to enable them to make the most of their training and participate fully in the service delivery.

Apprentices will be contracted to work 37.5 hours per week, divided into 80% workplace based and 20% protected study time. Study time will be either within the department or at the associated Higher Education Institution (HEI). Attendance of training at the HEI is considered to be essential and annual leave must be arranged outside these sessions. The post holder will be expected to discuss their planned study with their mentor or superintendent radiographer each week.

The post holder will fulfil all tasks and work as part of a team responsible for providing an efficient imaging service in the Diagnostic Imaging Department. To meet the needs of the service, the post holder may be required to work in other areas and hospitals as appropriate, as directed by the line manager. It may be necessary to attend other Imaging Departments to gain sufficient experience in some modalities.

The post holder will have a close working relationship with staff across a variety of professional boundaries in order to maintain efficient links with other wards and Departments throughout the Trust.

Apprentice Diagnostic Radiographer 37.5 hours

An apprenticeship in Diagnostic Radiography may be for you.  We have exciting opportunities for enthusiastic, caring, and dedicated people keen to train as Radiographers, who will join our growing Medical Imaging department at the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.  This is our 4th successful year of training apprentices.

You will be embedded within the department working 80% of your hours alongside our team, and study with the University of Exeter for the remainder of your time.  Upon successful completion of the course, you will gain a BSc Honours in Diagnostic Radiography and be eligible for professional registration with the HCPC. This fully funded programme allows you to study and earn a wage at the same time, with extensive workplace learning and practice, supported by academic learning at the University and through distance learning, and self-study.

Successful applicants must meet the academic entry requirements of the University of Exeter for this course which can be found on the University website.

Based at the Royal Devon University Hospital in central Exeter, our medical imaging team provide a broad range of imaging modality services including, X-Ray, nuclear medicine, interventional radiology, CT, MRI, and ultrasound.  We also have a dedicated team of radiographers delivering imaging across 7 community locations and at the new Devon Diagnostic Centre in Exeter whom you will be working with as you rotate through the acute site.  All our sites are fully DR/PACS equipped and provide high quality imaging services across East Devon.

Our core commitment to supporting ongoing professional development is demonstrated in our growing number of Reporting Radiographers who support Axial, Appendicular, CT Colon, Chest, and DXA reporting. 

We are proudly in our seventh year as an accredited centre under the UKAS Quality Standards for Imaging (QSI) Accreditation Scheme and have a demonstrated commitment to continued quality improvement for patients and staff.  Successful candidates will be flexible, adaptable and patient focussed, aiming to deliver the highest standards of clinical care.

This will be paid at Annex 21 of Band 5:

Year 1 - £21,407.10

Year 2 - £23,053,80

Year 3 - £24,700.50
