Role Summary
The Apprentice Associate Audiologist is a member of the Audiology Team based at Northern Devon District Hospital. Working and training under the supervision and guidance of registered Audiologists, the post holder will undertake a structured programme of training to gain a foundation degree in Healthcare Science (Audiology) and will develop the knowledge, skills and competencies required to deliver high-quality audiology services.
The role involves performing the assessment, treatment and ongoing care of patients with hearing loss, while ensuring accurate record keeping, effective use of specialist equipment and the maintenance of a clean, safe and welcoming clinical environment. The post holder will manage their time, workload and resources effectively, contribute to the smooth running of the service to support individuals in improving their hearing.
The Apprentice Associate Audiologist will develop and maintain effective working relationships with patients, relatives, carers and healthcare professionals. They will act as a positive role model, and support the delivery of safe, efficient and high-quality audiology services in accordance with Trust values and standards.

The Apprentice Associate Audiologist is a valued member of the Audiology Team based at Northern Devon District Hospital. The post holder will undertake a structured programme of education, training and workplace-based learning to develop the knowledge, clinical skills and professional behaviours required to support the delivery of high-quality audiology services. Following successful completion of training and a Foundation Degree in Healthcare Science (Audiology), they will continue to work as an Associate Audiologist, practising within clearly defined boundaries of competence and in accordance with local and national policies, protocols and professional standards.
The post holder will play an important role in supporting the assessment, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of patients with hearing loss. Working as part of the audiology team, they will undertake clinical activities independently, assist with patient management and contribute to the delivery of safe, effective and patient-centred care. This may include supporting and running hearing aid repair clinics, undertaking routine audiological procedures, performing diagnostic testing, providing patient education and advice, maintaining clinical equipment and ensuring accurate documentation of patient care.
The Apprentice Associate Audiologist will develop the skills required to communicate effectively with patients of all ages and abilities, including those with complex communication needs, sensory impairments, learning disabilities or additional healthcare requirements. They will support patients, relatives and carers by providing clear information, reassurance and practical guidance to enable informed decision-making and promote independence in managing hearing and communication difficulties.
The role requires the use of specialised audiological equipment and computerised clinical systems to perform procedures and record patient information accurately. The post holder will be expected to maintain high standards of clinical care, infection prevention and control, health and safety, and data protection, ensuring that all activities are carried out in line with Trust policies and professional standards.
As part of the wider Audiology Service, the post holder will contribute to the efficient running of clinics and service delivery by managing their time, workload and resources effectively. They will participate in service development initiatives, quality improvement activities, audits and training opportunities, and will actively contribute to creating a positive patient experience. The role may involve working independently within agreed competencies, including lone working where appropriate and in accordance with Trust policies.
The Apprentice Associate Audiologist will work closely with Audiologists, ENT Consultants, Clinical Nurse Specialists, General Practitioners, community healthcare professionals, rehabilitation services, sensory support teams and external suppliers to ensure coordinated and seamless care for patients. They will act as a professional role model, demonstrating the Trust's values and behaviours while promoting a culture of compassion, dignity, inclusion and continuous improvement.
Through the provision of high-quality audiological support and rehabilitation, the post holder will contribute to improving patients' hearing, communication abilities and overall health and wellbeing, enabling them to maximise their independence and quality of life.
Working Pattern: 8am till 6pm 4 days a week
